Four Days in Halifax, North Carolina: A Work & Play Getaway

We recently managed to sneak away from our home in Southwest Florida for a quick four-night trip to Halifax, North Carolina—and even with a to-do list that was a mile long, we found time for delicious meals, great company, and a few local adventures.

And the best part? We scored round-trip plane tickets for three people for under $115 total. Yes, you read that right—three people, round-trip!

Day 1 – Arrival & First Bites in Raleigh

After landing in Raleigh, our stomachs led us straight to (ish) delicatessen—a self-described “Not-Quite-Jewish, a little Italian-ish, maybe Southern” sandwich shop at 702 N. Person Street. I ordered their corned beef sandwich, and it was hands-down one of the best I’ve ever had. The secret? Instead of traditional sauerkraut, they use purple cabbage for a fresh, colorful twist.

Next stop: the State Farmers Market in Raleigh. This market is always worth the detour for fresh produce, local cheeses, and baked goods. We stocked up on food for the next few days in Halifax—nothing beats farm-fresh ingredients for cooking at home.

By late afternoon, we arrived at our home away from home—The John Brown House in downtown Halifax. This historic vacation rental was waiting for us, along with a list of tasks to get it ready for the next long-term tenant. A deep clean, some painting, and minor repairs were all on the agenda.

That evening, we caught up with friends turned family (affectionately called “Mimi One” and “Mimi Two” by Brax) and enjoyed a hearty dinner at Don Juan’s in Roanoke Rapids—delicious as always.

Day 2 – Coffee on the Porch, Cleaning & a Favorite Lunch Spot

We actually started our Monday morning slow, enjoying fresh hot coffee on the porch in our rocking chairs while watching the quiet town wake up. It’s one of my favorite simple pleasures in Halifax—the perfect mix of fresh air, history, and peace before the day gets busy.

Once the mugs were empty, it was time to get to work. I tackled cleaning and repainting the kitchen cabinets, scrubbing the bedroom floors upstairs, and repairing scuffs from previous guests. The oven alone took two hours to clean— but it’s practically brand new now!

We took a quick break to visit our favorite library staff, and Brax picked out a few new books to enjoy!

For lunch, we headed to Two Doors Down, one of our favorite Halifax lunch spots. Their cold sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies never disappoint. Later, Brax got to spend time with his friend Jay, while we ordered pizza from a local Roanoke Rapids spot for a laid-back dinner.

Day 3 – Power Washing in the Rain & Sunset Slush

Tuesday was another big cleaning day. I finished the second floor, moved downstairs, and washed every single linen in the house—towels, sheets, mattress covers… you name it. Meanwhile, Brandon braved the pouring rain to power wash the exterior.

We rewarded ourselves with an afternoon treat from Sunset Slush—because a rainbow of Italian ice flavors can brighten any gray, rainy day.

Day 4 – The Parksdale House & Farmer’s Market Pasta

Wednesday afternoon took us to Rich Square to meet with a contractor at The Parksdale House, our other historic property under restoration. There, we had the pleasure of meeting Tina from Abandoned ENC, who came to photograph the home. Brax and her son became instant friends, spending the afternoon playing tag in the front yard.

That evening, I cooked what might have been my best pasta dish yet—farmer’s market pasta made with fresh brats, Goat Lady Dairy cheese, and colorful veggies we picked up in Raleigh.

Day 5 – Early Flights & Goodbye (for Now)

Thursday morning came far too quickly. We packed up, locked up The John Brown House, and headed back to the airport for our early flight home.

We left Halifax with a cleaner, fresher vacation rental, new memories with friends, and a renewed appreciation for small-town life. Until next time, Halifax—you never disappoint.
